Notification is received that the 2007 LABC South West Awards will be presented in February in Torquay, InterPublic are advised that they have made the short list for the Best Accessible Project. Directors David Johnston and Alistair Humphreys were joined by Stuart Finney, Contracts Officer for Mendip District Council, at the Grand Hotel, Torquay for the Awards Ceremony.

The Master of Ceremonies for the evening announced that the short list for the Best Accessible Project comprised six projects and followed this with a brief description of the projects. Presenting Certificates of Merit to all but the winners, InterPublic Urban Systems’ name was the last to be announced and they triumphed again, walking away with LABC 2007 Best Accessible Project South West Region.

With two successes back to back InterPublic were encouraged to enter the National LABC awards to be presented in London in October 2007. Mindful that this project which had won at regional level was on a small scale compared to large city projects hopes were not high of any success.  The application for nomination was completed in July and forwarded to the LABC office. Notified in August that InterPublic were part of the first short list, the luck ran out and the project did not make the National Awards presentation short list.

Mendip's Toilets are Best in the West - 09 May 2007

St Johns Car Park, Glastonbury

Mendip's loos have been flushed with further success after winning through to the finals of a national competition.

Mendip District Council's new block of toilets in St Johns Car Park,
Glastonbury, have been voted the Best Accessible Building in the Local Authority Building Control's (LABC) annual South West Built In Quality Awards.

The accolade comes hot on the heels of the council's own Built In Quality Awards which gave similar honours to the toilets earlier this year.

The block was built by InterPublic Urban Systems and is part of a three-year investment programme by the district council to update public conveniences across Mendip.

The toilets will now go through to the LABC's national finals which take place in October at the Grosvenor Hotel in London.

In addition, Mendip District Council also scooped a highly commended for its work with the builders of a loft conversion at Springbourne House in Frome, which won a prize in the Best Domestic Extension/Alteration category.

Tracy Aarons, who manages Mendip District Council's building control team, said: "Congratulations go to both InterPublic Urban Systems for the Glastonbury toilets and to Pauline Fletcher and Clive Blakey for their work on the conversion at Springbourne House.

"Both were already recognised as the best at our council's awards - this is now a double celebration for them. We are keeping our fingers crossed that they will be successful on a national level.

"The building control team at Mendip work closely with developers to ensure construction is to the highest quality, and these awards prove this close partnership working is paying off."

Matthew Hunt, the chairman of the LABC South West region, said: "The quality of nominations for these awards has been very impressive and offers a clear demonstration as to what the region can achieve through commitment and dedication to the end product."
